The 2023 Spider-Man 2 game is yet another big Marvel title, and given how interconnected the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in the film and TV space, it’s natural to wonder if this video game is a part of it. So is the Spider-Man 2 game set in the MCU?
Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 set in the MCU?
Insomniac Games’ 2023 game Spider-Man 2 is not directly set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is not Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. It has its own Spider-Man voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (with a face modeled after Ben Jordan). This means its antagonists and protagonists are its own.
It is rather secular in the game space, too. It is not related to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel’s Midnight Suns (although Lowenthal also voices Spider-Man in that game), or Marvel’s Avengers. Insomniac has not even confirmed if it is in the same universe as its upcoming Wolverine game.
However, as is the case with many pieces of comic book media, the multiverse makes this all a little looser. This iteration of Spider-Man with the big white spider insignia did make appearances in some form in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, two films that made all sorts of Spider-Men canon. And with its ties to the MCU, there’s a very loose argument that they are somewhat related, even if they don’t take place in the same exact universe.
There is a very direct nod to the Spider-Verse films through the Spider-Bot collectibles. Finding all of these opens up a portal to an animated dimension where a character speaks about Miguel, who is undoubtedly Spider-Man 2099. Given the cartoonish art style, reference to Miguel, and the dimension-skipping nature of the mission, this is some sort of link to the animated Spider-Verse films. However, it is worth reiterating that this is all just multiverse stuff and they all seem relegated to their own universes.
