Future entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise will place a larger emphasis on modern day elements, Ubisoft lead writer Darby McDevitt revealed.
"We always plan to have more modern day but we have to be really smart about how we do it. There was a plan for a little more modern day in Unity…" he explained in a community livestream. Unfortunately, however, the team simply couldn't dedicate the time necessary to making something like that a reality with last year's game.
"The thing with Unity was that it was a completely fresh game on a completely fresh generation. So creating any kind of modern day is a pretty huge ask," McDevitt added. "To create a city, for instance, or even part of a city, would require six months of work by many, many artists, designers, modelers. And then you'd need gameplay systems that didn't feel like you were just fencing."
That said, if the studio is wise about reusing assets, more modern day elements are a possibility in future entires, with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's use of Monteriggioni serving as a perfect example. "That only came about because [we] were able to reuse Monteriggioni from AC2," McDevitt explained. "So the future – and this is the plan – is to smartly reuse things so we can have a more robust modern day."
Ubisoft has yet to unveil the next proper entry in the series, but reports suggest it will be called Assassin's Creed Victory and will be set in London during the Industrial Revolution.
