Bethesda Shows off Skyrim Switch with Zelda Amiibo Support, Says Relationship with Nintendo Is “Really Special”

Bethesda’s press conference yesterday evening was chock-full of good info and footage from its upcoming games, but one segment was particularly rare for a Bethesda press conference: good news for Nintendo fans. The previously-confirmed rendition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo Switch received a new trailer, and better yet, confirmed amiibo support with Legend of Zelda amiibo that can be scanned into the game.

The trailer focuses specifically on Switch’s handheld mode, quickly demonstrating amiibo functionality as an unmistakable (yet slightly disturbing) Skyrim-ified version of Link appears in-game once the amiibo is scanned. You can check out the trailer below.

As the trailer points out, an amiibo scan unlocks not just Link’s Breath of the Wild duds, but also the Master Sword – the jury is still out on exactly how effective such a weapon will be in the world of Skyrim. Skyrim‘s Nintendo Switch edition will also feature motion controls, a nice nod to Wii Zelda entry Skyward Sword, not to mention the more subtle motion features of Breath of the Wild like aiming and manipulating Sheikah runes.

Bethesda itself seems pleased with the pairing, stating on its Twitter page that it’s “really special for us to finally work with Nintendo.” While Skyrim on Nintendo Switch will surely be enjoyable, perhaps more important is the potential for future collaboration between the two companies via future Bethesda games. Of course, it’s too soon to say, and the rest of Bethesda’s conference didn’t exactly suggest this, but even so; it’s a step in the right direction.
