Project Octopath Traveler

New Details and Demo Emerge for Project Octopath Traveler

During today’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo spotlighted games that are coming either the rest of this year or sometime next year for Switch or 3DS. A few of those games – Pokemon Ultra Sun & Moon, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Super Mario Odyssey – had the limelight for a significant portion of the program, due to release dates, level reveals, or simply new info provided.

One of those highlighted games was the upcoming exclusive JRPG from Square Enix called Project Octopath Traveler. This retro-style title was previously revealed at the initial Switch reveal in January of this year before going mostly quiet. Thankfully, that has changed completely today as we were given some new details about the game.

Project Octopath Traveler’s unique art-style has been dubbed “HD-2D” and is coming from the producers of (a personal favorite of mine) the Bravely Default series. In this gorgeous game, you choose from eight different protagonists in a “free world” where each of them has their own quirk that affects gameplay.

Two of the eight were shown as examples, Olberic and Primrose. In the case of Olberic, he is able to challenge almost everyone he encounters to a duel. This triggers an optional fight with that person that can be used for various purposes, including getting rid of someone that is blocking a door.

The other shown was Primrose. This illustrious dancer can use her allure skill to seduce someone into following her. The given examples of this skill was using it to find someone who is missing or bringing an NPC with you to assist in the turn-based battles. Each of the other six playable characters will have their own specific powers.

Hilariously enough, the game was announced to be releasing next year even though its title is still a work-in-progress. On the bright side, a demo is available right now on the Switch eShop. Are you excited for Project Octopath Traveler? Will you be downloading the demo in anticipation? Let’s discuss this interesting JRPG in the comments.
