Namco Bandai released its first PC game ever today in the form of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, and although its visual performance was supposed to be tied-down, PC modders have shown that they always have the last word.
A modder who goes by the name of Durante on NeoGAF has already figured out a way to unlock Namco Bandai's imposed Dark Souls frame buffer resolution of 1024×720. Best of all he was able to do within 23 minutes of receiving the game.
He posted the following shortly after the game's launch:
Took me 23 minutes, without source access. (I dedicate this to the people that told me I'm unreasonable when I lambasted From for not doing something that takes a few hours at most in the other thread)
Why Namco Bandai decided to make the PC version one of the weakest ports in recent history is anyone's guess, and Durante hasn't seen any out-of-the-ordinary performance issues after adjusting the buffer to as high as 2560×1440. The only hurdle left is to get rid of the headache-inducing 30 fps limit, which is truthfully even more bothersome.
If you'd like to make your Dark Souls PC version look less like a game from 2008 then head on over to Durante's internal rendering resolution fix page and read the FAQ. A download link to the required file (d3d9.dll) can be found on Durante's blog.
