Ready Player One Trailer Features Some Surprising Video Game References

The new Ready Player One trailer has dropped, and while the book the film is based on is filled to the brim with pop culture references, some surprising video game cameos have made their way into the upcoming movie.

The film sees our hero Wade Watts venturing into the OASIS, a virtual world that features characters from across various entertainment mediums and franchises. As its name suggests, video games are featured pretty heavily in Ready Player One, though the book mostly limits its game references to those that were released in the ’80s. This won’t be the case in the upcoming film, with characters from modern franchises appearing in its trailer, alongside a few other surprising references.

Ready Player One video game references

Street Fighter’s Hadouken-firing martial artist Ryu can be seen walking through rows of parked cars.

Blanka, the electrifying monster from the Street Fighter franchise, can also be seen in the back of this nightclub scene. You can’t miss that green complexion and wild, orange hair.

The Street Fighter series is once again represented, with Chun-li leading a charge into battle alongside Tracer from Overwatch. Considering that Overwatch was only released in 2016, it’s clear that Ready Player One is going to be looking to more recent games for references, too.

Battletoads heroes Rash, Zitz and Pimple make an appearance, leading an army of characters across a mountain.

There are also a few characters featured in the trailer who have appeared in video games, but are better known for their appearances elsewhere, such as The Joker and Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn’s costume seems heavily influenced by the one she wears in the Batman: Arkham series.

The RX-78 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam also lines up an exclusive attack.
