Spartacus Legends Will Be Free To Play On LIVE And PSN

The world is full of strange and interesting things. Take Ubisoft, for example. First they announce they’re dumping their God-awful DRM policy. Now they’re making fighting game. A free-to-play fighting game for LIVE and PSN.

Honest to God, Spartacus Legends will be available for download in first quarter of 2013, free-to-play and all. Of course, I’m sure good weapons and armor won’t be free, but you can design your own gladiator from scratch and get into sweaty, manly fights with players across the world. According to Joystiq:

Combatants in Spartacus Legends can withstand a lot more punishment. The combat is more combo-focused, so you won't lose an arm with a single swipe. It's a bit less realistic, but since permadeath is in play you may be glad fighters can take more of a beating. Yes, once your gladiator dies, he's dead forever.

Uhg. Permadeath. Really? For someone like me, who becomes heavily invested in the characters she creates, that can be a real game killer. There’s nothing like spending weeks developing a toon and getting all emotionally invested only to have him permanently decapitated in front of a roaring crowd.

And you know having to start a new character means you’ll have to spend more money on items to not suck. Free-to-play, indeed.
