A Ton Of Classic Sega Games Are Coming To The Switch

Sega seems to be rooted in nostalgia lately. Only recently did they announce that they would be adding ports of Shenmue and Shenmue 2 for consoles and PC. However, the nostalgia doesn’t seem like it’ll be stopping anytime soon, because now a ton of classic Sega games are coming to the Switch and let’s face it: it’s going to be awesome. Unfortunately the games won’t be a collection, but individual downloads. Not all of the games that are involved in the collection has been announced yet, however favorites like Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd are said to be part of it.

The collection will be released internationally during the summer, and all under the banner of ‘Sega Ages.’ Since the 1990s Sega has used the Sega Ages name for classic re-releases of their video games, these re-releases debuting on the Sega Saturn. These releases included truly classic games, such as Space Harrier, OutRun and Afterburner. Another Sega Ages series, known as Sega Ages 2500, later was released in Japan for the PlayStation 2, which included the complete collection of the Phantasy Star series.

So it was only a matter of time before Sega Ages for the Nintendo Switch, the first since 2012’s Sega Ages Online, would happen. Considering that Sega already has a numerous amount of games ported to the Switch, such as Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, it makes sense that Sega would invest the newest Sega Ages series for the Switch. As previously stated not all of the games have been announced, but it has been confirmed that there will be over 15 games in the collection. What’s more, these games will have new features incorporated to them, though Sega did not specify what these features will be.

We’re excited to see where Sega will go from here, though we also wonder if there will be anymore surprises up its sleeves in the future. Are you excited for the newest Sega Ages series? Let us know in the comments below.
