Rumor: Borderlands 3 Not Appearing at E3 2018, Card Game Will Take its Place

The rumored Borderlands 3 E3 2018 announcement reportedly won’t be taking place after all, with Gearbox instead working on an FPS and card game hybrid with the working title Project 1v1. This news is going to disappoint those who had hoped Gearbox would reveal its Borderlands sequel, with the new game only set to make an appearance behind closed doors in a secret presentation.

According to Gearbox, Project 1v1 is a “competitive first-person shooter that combines the action of fast-paced 1v1 first-person combat with the metagame strategy of a collectible card game.” CCGs have been increasingly popular since the success of Hearthstone, though with Valve’s Artificant and now Project 1v1, they are becoming a bugbear for those who want development studios to work on their bigger and more popular franchises.

Project 1v1 will have a “short Closed Technical Test this summer,” with a small number of players testing out its online infrastructure. This will be used to help the development of the game, with ranked, challenge, and arena modes being available to play. Very little is known about the game right now, aside from the below image (via VG247) that has reportedly been taken from the shooter/CCG hybrid:

Borderlands 3 is one of the most highly anticipated sequels for many, so the likelihood that it won’t appear at E3 2018 will be disappointing. This would also suggest that the release of Borderlands 3 is not exactly around the corner.

Back in mid-May, Borderlands publisher Take-Two announced that a “highly-anticipated title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises, which had been planned for release during the current fiscal year, is now planned for launch during fiscal 2020 to allow for additional development time.” With Project 1v1 appearing at E3 rather than Borderlands 3, could this mean that the Gearbox sequel is the game that has received this extensive delay?

Gearbox could potentially have some more news pertaining to the current state of Borderlands 3 during E3 2018, though if you’re into your CCGs, then keep an eye on GameRevolution throughout next week for more news on the mysterious Project 1v1.
