Is there anything worse than an open world full of fetch quests? The answer is no. There is, of course, hope that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be different from the crowd considering that Ubisoft’s previous games have always seemed to remain remarkably similar in each new game, lacking in quest variety. There’s the trail quests, the collection quests and the hide-and-seek quests and a whole lot more. Sure there isn’t anything wrong with them, especially when developers just want you to spend more time in their world, but it does get boring after a while.
Trail quests, in particular, have been part of the Assassin’s Creed franchise for such a long time that it’s hard to imagine a game without them in. The concept is simple, you follow a target for as long as the quest needs you to, all the while trying your hardest not to get caught in the process. Assassin’s Creed Origins wasn’t too terrible with this sort of quest, giving players much more freedom than previous games, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some improvements to make.
Scott Phillips, Odyssey’s creative director, also seems to agree that quest variety does need some improvements. Improvements that his team is more than capable to handle to make sure players get the best experience.
Speaking to Gaming Bolt, Phillips said: “I think we have made huge improvements on [quest variety] by focusing on choice. By giving players choice, by giving players options, and how they complete quests, how they interact with quest givers, how they role-play with the characters. Because for the first time ever you’ll be choosing who you play as.” He continued, “It is a very different experience and it’s much more interactive and dynamic in both the world and the characters in the story. So, gameplay will reflect that as well.”
While Phillips didn’t go into much detail, it does imply what we already knew: that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will be more like an RPG than ever before thanks to choice, an option that previous games didn’t have.
