Sonic the Hedgehog movie release date

The Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Release Date Has Changed

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie release date has been pushed forward by a whole week, meaning the hyped-up live-action Hollywood film based on Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog will now arrive in early November.

Rumors of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie have circulated for practically as long as the blue blur has existed. Sonic and his pal have graced the silver screen with plenty of cartoons in the past, but this will be their first shot at a true live-action Hollywood event.

Sony Pictures Interactive bought up the rights to distribute a movie based on the iconic video game character back in 2013, yet confirmation of plans to produce such a film were only made official a year later with news that it would be a live-action/CGI hybrid flick.

Things went quiet for a time, as they usually do when firms attempt to make a movie based on a video game, but early 2016 saw Sega’s CEO reassure fans that it was on track to make a 2018 debut. And it will. Despite swapping over to Paramount Pictures late last year, pushing the film’s release date forward shows that Paramount Pictures is confident in its ability to deliver the finished movie. Following the release date change, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie release date is now set at November 8.

Neither Sega or Paramount Pictures has clarified just why Sonic the Hedgehog movie release date has been brought forward, but with Hollywood, it’s usually a case of identifying the best environment for a successful opening weekend by targeting holidays and avoiding clashes with films that share the target demographic.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a live action movie with CG animated aspects. Ben Schwartz will voice an animated Sonic, with the legendary Jim Carrey playing series villain Dr. Eggman. It hasn’t been confirmed whether Eggman will be computer animated in the same way as Sonic, but given Carrey’s award-winning performances for physical comedy, we suspect he’ll be part of the live-action talent.
