Tetris Effect Release Date Announced

Publisher Enhance, Inc. has finally figured where to slot in its upcoming puzzle game. The studio announced that the Tetris Effect release date will be on November 9 exclusively on the PS4 with PSVR support. No price was revealed.

The announcement tweet showed the date and promised that more details would be “coming soon.” Enhance hasn’t shown much of the puzzler aside from the E3 coverage it got, so we can likely expect some new modes, songs, or a price reveal somewhere down the line. The studio already revealed in the announcement post that the game will be getting a demo at some point in the future because “the best way to understand Tetris Effect is to play it yourself.”

Tetris Effect is being developed by a lot of the same minds who brought us Rez Infinite and Lumines. It is also being designed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who was a key figure behind those aforementioned titles as well as Child of Eden. That is not surprising, given the audiovisual similarities between all these titles.

That style is incredibly visible in the game itself. It is still Tetris but updated to fit in more with other contemporary puzzle games. Blocks still drop from the top, but the game also now has a special slow motion effect that lets players stack and more achieve more complicated combos.

This is all in service to its trippy visual aesthetic. Blocks explode and the music swells and falls with your actions in a way reminiscent of Lumines. Virtual reality boosts all of these effects and, according to our preview, “seems like the way to play Tetris Effect.”

Sony had originally announced Tetris Effect in days leading up to E3 along with showing Days Gone‘s release date and revealing developer Dontnod’s Twin Mirror. This is where the publisher showed off smaller titles like this to not steal the spotlight from Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us Part 2.
