Rumor: Diablo Netflix Animated Series in Development

Diablo Netflix animated series is reportedly in development according to a now-deleted tweet. It is unclear when it will come out and what part of the lore it will adapt. This is not the first time the TV and film streaming service has made an animated adaptation of a video game franchise.

This rumor surfaced after BOOM! Studios founder Andrew “Andy” Cosby tweeted that he was in “final talks” with Netflix to write and show-run this series (via Variety). He added that “It’s very exciting and I hope to the High Heavens it all works out.”

Cosby was asked by a fan whether he was involved in such a project earlier this year and he simply replied that they should “check back with him in the future.” The earliest we could get a confirmation about this project is at BlizzCon 2018, which will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California on November 2 and 3. Cosby is currently helping pen the script for Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen with Mike Mignola—the original creator of Hellboy—and Christopher Golden. The film is due out on January 11, 2019.

As mentioned before, this is not the first time Netflix has adapted a video game property in animated form. In July 2017, the company put out Castlevania which is an adaptation of the 1989 NES game, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. The second season of the show is slated to release October 26, 2018.

Diablo originally came out in 1996 on PC and Mac OS and was developed by Blizzard North. It later had two sequels, Diablo II and Diablo III. The latest entry into the franchise was Diablo III: Eternal Collection, which collected all of its expansions in one package. Its forthcoming release on the Switch in November this year will be the first time the series has come to any of Nintendo’s consoles.
