Red Dead Redemption 2 Native 4K Resolution Confirmed by Xbox

Red Dead Redemption 2 will boast a native 4K resolution on the Xbox One X, a tweet from Xbox France has confirmed. The upcoming open-world game will be playable in Ultra HD on the Microsoft console, though Sony has yet to confirm if the same resolution will be available on the PS4 Pro.

The tweet from Xbox France confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be playable in 4K HDR on the Xbox One X, the highest possible graphics setting on the 4K-ready console. With the PS4 Pro being less powerful than Microsoft’s hardware, it’s unclear if native 4K HDR will be available on the console, or if RDR 2 will instead upscale to 4K.

Much like Grand Theft Auto 5, which pushed the technical limitations of the Xbox 360 and PS3 at the time of its release, Rockstar looks to once again raise the bar for console visuals with Red Dead Redemption 2. The studio has upgraded its in-house RAGE engine, which runs in HDR internally, so draw distance and visual detail are shaping up to be second-to-none.

Sony has commented on RDR 2‘s capabilities, noting that “4K HDR TV owners will benefit from enhanced graphics and optimized performance for a stunningly sharp and detailed look (when compared to a PS4 system).” as you live, ride and fight to survive as an outlaw in a notorious gang.” However, as Sony hasn’t stated that a native 4K resolution will be available on the PS4 Pro, it can be assumed that this won’t be the case.

It remains to be seen if this visual advantage will lead to increased sales of the Xbox One X, or if more gamers will choose to buy RDR 2 for Xbox due to its native 4K capabilities. However, for console owners who want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 with the best possible visual experience, the Xbox One X seems to be the way to go.
