Metal Gear Solid Board Game Coming in 2019

A Metal Gear Solid board game will be releasing next year. IDW Games is developing the board game adaptation of the 1998 video game of the same name. Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is a 1-4 player cooperative game featuring miniatures.

Emerson Matsuuchi is designing the game for IDW Games and Konami. Players take on the roles of Solid Snake, Meryl, Otacon, and Gray Fox in the game. Each character has unique skills that will be used to avoid detection. The Metal Gear Solid board game roughly follows the plot of the 1998 classic, but adapts aspects when needed. The game features a “highly dynamic AI system and sandbox gameplay,” which will allow players to complete objectives in a number of ways.

In a press release, Emerson Matsuuchi, the game’s designer, said, “I’m probably the biggest fan of Metal Gear Solid. Ever since playing the first Metal Gear Solid, it has forever altered the way I view games. The story it told was so memorable and the gameplay experience so rich that it has shaped my expectation of games as both a designer and gamer.”

The Metal Gear Solid board game features miniatures designed by Francesco Orrù and art by Kenneth Loh. IDW Games and Konami will begin to showcase the game at E3 2019.

Matsuuchi previously designed the Century series, Reef, and Specter Ops. The latter is a stealth-action tabletop game, and could be a basis for Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game. Specter Ops has been well-received by tabletop fans, and received a sequel called Specter Ops: Broken Covenant earlier this year. Matsuuchi’s work should ensure that the MGS tabletop game will be exciting for players.

Konami’s critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid released on the original PlayStation in late 1998. The Hideo Kojima-directed game received high praise for its cinematic presentation, voice acting, and graphics. The title is a sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and kicked off the series of “Tactical Espionage Action” directed by Kojima.
