Splatoon 2 sales

Splatoon 2 sales top charts in Japan; beat Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda in Japan

Splatoon 2 sales are the highest of any Nintendo Switch game in Japan. A chart of the best-selling Japanese retail Nintendo Switch games has revealed the ink-shooter has outshone all of its competition. Splatoon 2 sales beat the six Mario titles in the top 20 along with Nintendo giants like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Let’s Go.

At nearly three million boxed units, Splatoon 2 sales performance in Japan are significant, but don’t tell the whole story of the top 20. The top five of the charts shows Mario all but dominates physical sales in the country. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey make up the top three spots respectively. While Pokemon Let’s Go rounds off the top five. Another interesting inclusion in the top 20 is the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit, the cardboard platform recently launched its first VR kit.

Despite being primarily dominated by Nintendo published release, some non-Nintendo titles do make it in there. Minecraft is the highest performing, selling 651,275 physical units. Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 make up the rest of the non-Nintendo field. One title that may be unfamiliar to western players, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun, is at #14. The title was, however, the first Taiko no Tatsujin game to be released in the west over the past decade.

Splatoon 2 held a European tournament in January, inviting players from across the continent to participate. It didn’t quite go to plan, with some European users claiming they were excluded from the regional tournament.

The Japanese chart shows off the best of what the Nintendo Switch has to offer. We recently looked into graphical prowess of the platform and why it is making the best looking games right now. We also discussed why another franchise on the list, The Legend of Zelda, chose the wrong Zelda game to remake.
