Sega’s Mega Drive Mini is getting an Asian version with a different set of exclusives

Sega has announced a third version of its upcoming Mega Drive Mini/Genesis Mini retro console. This new version will be released in Asian markets and will come with its own set of exclusive titles.

Taiwanese news outlet GNN has reported the details of this new Asian version of the Sega Mega Drive Mini, including the announced games. Among these games, those that aren’t available in the other two versions of the miniature console are the action role-playing game Sword of Vermillion and the timely arcade racer Outrun2019. The other games announced for this version are Space Harrier II, Wrestleball, Shining Force, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Puyo Puyo Tsu, and Comix Zone. The rest of the 40 games slated for the retro console have yet to be announced.

As with the US Genesis Mini, the Asian version of the Mega Drive Mini will only be sold in the two-controller variation. Japan’s version of the retro console will be available with both one controller and two controller variations. Whether the Asian version will have the six-button controllers or only the three-buttons ones like the US Genesis Mini is still unknown.

Like the Sega Genesis Mini in the photo, the Asian Mega Drive mini will only come with 2 controllers

Originally set to release in 2018, the Mega Drive Mini as well as its Genesis counterpart were delayed after Sega dropped their original hardware partner AtGames. The retro console is now instead being developed with the help of M2, who had previously worked on various Sega Ages collections. Legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro of Streets of Rage fame has been tapped to compose a score for the system’s interface.

With the announcement of the Asian version of the Mega Drive Mini, only Europe has yet to have a regional variation of the retro console. Its highly likely that we’ll get an announcement from Sega on this soon, since Europe was a strong market for the system back in the day.

The Sega Mega Drive Mini and Genesis Mini are both set to be released on September 19, 2019.
