Sega may do a Sega CD Mini

Sega may do a Sega CD Mini, and other retro consoles if the Genesis Mini sells well

The upcoming Sega Genesis Mini/Mega Drive Mini retro-console will not feature any Sega CD games. However, the company is apparently open to making a Sega CD Mini and perhaps even more miniature consoles.

Sega Chief Contents Officer Hiroyuki Miyazaki was recently interviewed by Japanese magazine Famitsu about the company’s upcoming retro console. According to a translation by Siliconera, Miyazaki confirmed that the Sega Genesis Mini/Mega Drive Mini will not feature any Sega CD games. With that said, he also stated that Sega may look into developing a Sega CD Mini as a follow up if the Genesis Mini and Mega Drive Mini do well in sales.

In addition to this, he also talked about the possibility of a Sega Saturn Mini. Miyazaki stated that cost of the technology they’d need to do it makes a Saturn Mini far from certain, as the original Sega Saturn was known as a very difficult console to program for. This was due to its unique hardware which featured 8 individual processors, including two CPUs. This led to problems with multi-platform games, and exclusives were another story entirely. The system did receive a number of classic titles, many of which have never been ported to other platforms.

As for the games coming to the Genesis Mini/Mega Drive Mini, a number of them apparently required some edits for them to be released. These were mostly minor fixes that shouldn’t be noticeable, though there were some where the team had to revise a large amount of text.

Regarding the unannounced games in the retro consoles line up, Miyazaki stated that Sega would reveal some new information regarding specific titles in the April 18 edition of Famitsu. After this, they will reveal 10 more titles in a separate event, followed by another 10 titles just before E3 2019. Finally, Miyazaki added that they may have something in store for the 2019 Tokyo Game Show.

All three announced versions of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini will go on sale on September 19, 2019.
