The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTA for short, is an independent charity that supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving images, including video games, in the United Kingdom. The first BAFTA games awards were held back in 1998 as part of an effort to recognize new forms of entertainment. Some of the titles that were honored in that first BAFTA games awards included classics such as Goldeneye and Gran Turismo.  Other high profile winners throughout the years include iconic titles such as Halo 2 and Half-Life 2.

In 2006, BAFTA decided to elevate games to the same level as film and television. Following this, the academy now advertises video games as their third major topic in recognition of their importance.
