Persona 5

Persona 5 sales have gone over 2.7 million copies worldwide

Atlus has announced that Persona 5 sales have reached more than 2.7 million units worldwide. This follows the company’s announcement of the enhanced Persona 5 Royal update.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that the figure comes from an Amazon Japan listing for Persona 5 Royal. Earlier this month, Naoto Hiraoka, former Atlus president and CEO and current brand owner, mentioned that the game had sold about 2.4 million copies in an interview with Taiwan’s GNN Gamer.

Persona 5 is currently the best selling installment of the franchise. Atlus confirmed this last December when the game passed the 2 million mark in sales. The company however has not released sales data for previous Persona installments.

“We are in the middle of experiencing tremendous growth, both in the west and abroad, and the sales of Persona 5 represent a new level of expectation for fans of the genre,” Hiraoka stated in the announcement last year. “Once seen as niche, Persona 5 is one of the most important titles this year, proving interest in this category is expanding.”

In the same announcement last December, Atlus stated that the franchise as a whole had sold 8.9 million copies. Based on the new Persona 5 sales number then, this amount has now risen to 9.3 million copies.

Of course, this number is likely to continue to increase with the impending Persona 5 Royal. The enhanced upgrade follows in the footsteps of Persona 4 Golden by adding a new character named Kasumi Yoshizawa, as well as new social links. The updated game will also add the Kichijoji neighborhood of Tokyo’s Mushashino City as a playable location. Persona 5 Royal arrives on PlayStation 4 in Japan on October 31. A Western release will follow in 2020.

In addition to this, Atlus will reveal another game, called Persona 5 S, tomorrow. Rumors point to this game as being the long awaited Nintendo Switch port of Persona 5. Of course, Switch owners can already play Persona 5 protagonist Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where’s he’s a DLC character.
