Mortal Kombat 11 sees the best launch in series history

Mortal Kombat 11 sales are the highest the franchise has ever seen. Speaking at the 2019 GamesBeat Summit, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad revealed the news. Amazingly, Mortal Kombat 11 sales are this high only a day after release. On top of this, series creator Ed Boon is still working alongside the developers despite having launched the franchise in 1992.

While Haddad didn’t name any numbers, he claimed that this was also the best launch of any Warner Bros. game in the Americas. Moreover, the game has “years of new content” coming due to this success. “I couldn’t be more proud of that team and what they’ve done and the innovations they’ve brought to [Mortal Kombat],” Haddad said.

Mortal Kombat 11 introduces new gameplay mechanics like Fatal and Krushing blows. These moves change up the gameplay by providing ways for weaker players to make a comeback or varying up the cinematic X-ray moves the franchise has made its trademark. There are 25 total fighters total, with three new ones: Geras, Cetrion, and Kollector.

Moreover, players can customize characters via gear, similar to the Injustice games. While each character has a starting set of moves and outfits, playing the game unlocks a ton of new ones for ultimate player expression.

The plot follows the events of the previous title in which Cassie Cage defeats Shinnok. From here, Raiden cuts off Shinnok’s head and becomes corrupted. Now Kronika, Shinnok’s mother, is after them. She rewrites time in order to stop this and declares war on our heroes.

Interestingly, Mortal Kombat 11‘s voice cast is very different from the previous game. According to a tweet from Vic Chao, a previous voice actor from Mortal Kombat X, most of the cast has been “revamped,” unfortunately.
