Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 confirmed, coming to Google Stadia

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been confirmed at the Google Stadia event. As teased earlier in the week, it is being developed by Larian Studios, the creators of Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the rest of the Divinity series. No specific platforms or price was announced, but of course it’s coming to Google’s Stadia streaming service, so it will be playable on all platforms that support Stadia. No release date was announced either, but it may launch with Stadia later this year.

In the Stadia reveal stream, Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke says that Baldur’s Gate 3 is “biggest game that we’ve ever done,” and the developer had to triple the size of its studio to make it. The team tried to make Baldur’s Gate 3 a long time ago apparently, but were turned down by Dungeons & Dragons owners Wizards of the Coast. However, after the success of Divinity: Original Sin 2, Wizards of the Coast offered it to Larian directly. Vincke describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a “big, epic RPG” where “the world around you reacts to what you’re doing,” similar to Larian’s other games. Like the Original Sin games Baldur’s Gate 3 will also be playable co-operatively.

It will be the first game in the famous RPG series since the console-only spin-off Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 in 2004, although the studio that remastered the original games for PC and mobile, Beamdog, was allowed to create an all-new expansion for the first game called Siege of Dragonspear in 2016. The original titles, Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, were the first RPGs from BioWare, and are considered two of the finest RPGs ever made.

You can check out the full CGI teaser announcement trailer below. It shows the Forgotten Realms city of Baldur’s Gate under attack, with most of its soldiers dead, and we watch as one soldier gets turned into a Cthulhu-like monster with tentacles for a mouth. We also get a glimpse of some large tentacle monster in the sky, as well as lots of flying humanoid creatures. The description gives a brief introduction to the Baldur’s Gate 3 story, and says that we will see the “return of a malevolent presence to Baldur’s Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out, corrupting everything that remains in the Forgotten Realms.”
