Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order developer compares it to Sekiro

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order developer compares the game’s combat to Sekiro

When Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order gameplay was debuted at E3 2019, its combat reminded some people of a certain ninja game by From Software. Now, the game’s own developers have also done the same, stating that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order‘s combat is “very similar” to Sekiros.

When it launched this past spring, Sekiro brought From’s familiar combat system that focused on precise timing of strikes, parries, and dodges, instead of combos but without the stamina bar of the Dark Souls games. This gave the game’s combat a unique feel compared to the latter, one that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order plays similarly to.

In a recent issue of EdgeStar Wars Jedi Fallen Order‘s Lead Combat Designer Jason de Heras discussed the game’s combat and how it’s similar to Sekiro. He specifically pointed to how both lack a stamina bar, while still implementing a timing focused combat system similar to the Dark Souls games.

“I thought it was pretty badass, and a little comforting to know that you could make this type of game without a stamina bar,” stated de Heras. “They let you attack, they let you roll, they do all this for free – and then the AI will tell you if you’re doing the correct thing.”

The similarity with Sekiro seems to have vindicated the team’s decision to go the way they did.

“It just confirmed to us that you don’t have to limit everything the player does; let them have a little more agency, and then let the AI give them a slap on the wrist or a punch in the face,” continued de Heras. “It was a positive thing for us to know there was a game that was similar to ours. Very similar.”

Of course, the comparisons with Sekiro do raise the question of whether Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order will be just as difficult a game. After all, the former maintained the challenging nature that From Software’s games are known for, despite the changes to the combat. Sadly, it seems de Heras didn’t mention anything about this. Players will just have to find out when Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order hits PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 15.
