Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 coming to PS4, Xbox One, Switch

Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 PS4, Xbox One, Switch releases announced

Doom Eternal isn’t the only new Doom game coming out this year. At QuakeCon, id Software revealed that it’s bringing the original Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3 to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. In addition to these, the first two games are also coming to iOS and Android.

The releases come as part of id Software’s celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The original Doom launched to much acclaim back in 1993, propelling the first-person shooter genre into the spotlight and securing id Software’s place in video game history.

The original Doom and Doom 2 set the template for 1990’s first-person shooters. Their fast-paced action and arena-style level design are what inspired the gameplay of the 2016 Doom reboot as well as its upcoming sequel Doom Eternal.

Of course, a return to classic form was required due to Doom 3. This 2004 release moved the franchise into a more survival horror-style direction. The game’s engine featured what was then a state-of-the-art real-time lighting and shadow system that allowed for a more terrifying take on the franchise, with demons lurking around every corner. It’s a different take on Doom to be sure, but one that’s still worth experiencing.

All three games come with a number of extras on all supported platforms. The original Doom comes with the expansion, Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed, which adds 9 additional levels to the original’s 28. Doom 2 on the other hand comes with the Master Levels, 20 additional levels was made by the game’s community under the supervision of its original developers. Finally, Doom 3 comes with both the Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Missions expansion packs.

In addition to these, both the original Doom and Doom 2 also come with offline deathmatch and cooperative play for four players, even on mobile devices.

All of these new Doom releases should allow players to experience some of the best games from the franchise’s history. It’ll also help whet their appetites for Doom Eternal, which arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch on November 22.
