Evo 2019’s Tekken 7 Snake reveal was a ‘little joke,’ DLC isn’t planned

Metal Gear Solid protagonist Snake appeared in a video during Evo 2019, prompting speculation that the character would make his way to Tekken 7. However, Evo has now confirmed that Snake won’t be coming to Tekken as a DLC character, saying that the video was “a little joke.”

In a short video clip that was shown exclusively to Evo attendees, Snake was shown alongside Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada in a Codec call. “That was some Good Ass Tekken,” Snake says in the call, which many took as an implication that Konami and Bandai Namco were collaborating.

But Evo has now confirmed that this isn’t the case. Tweeting from the official Evo account, the event’s organizers wrote: “Just to clear things up, the Snake cameo video that we showed during Tekken finals was our idea of a little joke. It was not intended to imply a character reveal, and was done on our own, without consulting Bandai Namco. Sorry for any confusion!”

Fans were quick to criticize the joke. “That was actually EXTREMELY thoughtless tbh,” one response reads. “Disappointing of whoever’s idea it was, and very disrespectful to Harada and Bandai Namco.”

Tekken 7 has featured a variety of outlandish DLC characters, including The Walking Dead‘s Negan and Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis Lucis Caelum. As such, Snake appearing in the fighting game wouldn’t be too farfetched an idea. Snake has also previously made appearances in another hugely popular series, with the character popping up as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.  However, Evo’s tweet confirms that Snake DLC isn’t planned for Tekken 7, and that the Codec call was simply an ill-advised joke that was misread by attendees.

Fortunately, more DLC characters are on their way, including the recently announced Leroy Smith and Zafina, who will both make their way to the game as part of its Season Pass 3. Two more DLC characters, along with a new game feature and a new stage, will also be added to the game as part of Season Pass 3, with these new additions making their way to Tekken 7 between September 2019 and Spring 2020.
