A new Resident Evil game might be announced at Gamescom 2019, with Capcom perhaps set to unveil Resident Evil 8 or the Resident Evil 3 Remake at the event. Rumors justifiably started swirling last week when Capcom sent Resident Evil Ambassadors in Japan invites to playtest something next month in Tokyo. Now, Geoff Keighley has announced that the Japanese developer will be joining him for Gamescom Opening Night Live, a streamed event which is scheduled to kick Gamescom off on August 19.
Keighley’s tweet mentions that over 15 games companies will make new announcements and/or premiere new content during the show, with the likes of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Xbox Game Studios, and Google Stadia in attendance, but Capcom’s scheduled appearance is of particular interest following the recent events outlined above. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is nearing release, Street Fighter 5 DLC announcements more fittingly took place around the recent EVO tournament, and Devil May Cry Mobile seems unlikely to appear, despite having resurfaced earlier today. That doesn’t leave much to speculate on beyond a new Resident Evil game, be it RE8 or RE3 Remake, both of which seem likely to happen following the success of previous games.

Fans have been clamoring for both sequels after Capcom recently revived what had arguably become an ailing series, though Resident Evil Revelations 3 could be another possibility, as the pair of spin-offs have also proven to be very popular with fans, despite humble beginnings on the Nintendo 3DS. With a playable demo version of the new game seemingly ready for members of the public to play test, plus the fact that Capcom must’ve known that its invite emails wouldn’t remain confidential for long (See: Plants vs. Zombies Picnic), all roads seem to lead to one place, and that’s more from the iconic survival horror franchise — whatever form it might take in this instance.
If you’re curious to learn more about Capcom’s upcoming announcement, be sure to stream Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 19.
