Devil May Cry 3 Switch version will have a new style switch feature

The Nintendo Switch is no stranger to re-releases, but many of them are just straight ports of the existing title, possibly with some incredibly minor Switch-exclusive features. Capcom has done this multiple times with a lot of its back catalog. But the upcoming Devil May Cry 3 Switch port will have at least one big new gameplay feature: the ability to switch styles during gameplay.

Devil May Cry 3, both in its original 2005 release and Special Edition re-release in 2006, allowed players to switch gameplay styles but only at the beginning of the mission and at the save statues sparingly spread through the stages. Now, as announced by Capcom, players will be able to go through any of the six styles at any time during regular gameplay, which is similar to how Dante played in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5. Capcom will even be showcasing the feature on January 16 at 2 PM PT.

This seemingly small change is quite big because of how fundamentally it alters the game and allows for more intricate combos. Players can rapidly change from Gunslinger stance to Trickster to Swordmaster to set up long juggles that you often see in impressive combo compilations or GIFs. Devil May Cry 3 is regarded by many as not only the best entry in the series, but one of the best action games of all time and this change will undoubtedly please many and help modernize a 15-year-old game. Players figured this feature was coming too, as early screen shots showed the style names in the top left corner much like DMC4 and DMC5. After all, players wouldn’t necessarily need to see the style names during gameplay if they couldn’t change them at will.

Capcom has not discussed if this function will make its way to the previously released Devil May Cry 3 HD ports that came out in 2018 on the current generation of systems. It’s unlikely but not impossible. However, it is even more unlikely to hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions that were released in 2012.

This was one of the few planned announcements Capcom had, well, announced for the Switch port. On January 7, Capcom tweeted that it have three special dates for the Switch port: January 16, January 30, and February 13. That last date is just a week before the DMC3 Switch port hits the eShop (and not physical retailers) on February 20.
