Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot combines the first two games in a Switch collection

At today’s Nintendo Direct E3 conference, a Switch collection of Advance Wars 1+2 was announced. The game’s focus is on tank-based combat and a party style. Its mechanics also suit the Switch’s reputation for fun and light-hearted entries.

Is Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot a remake or remaster?

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot

Rather than a complete remake, Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot is a remaster of the original two games.

It combines the first Advance Wars, released for Game Boy Advance in 2001, and 2003’s Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. Rather than a simple port over to Switch, the graphics are being revamped with a new and improved style. However, it doesn’t seem like the game was rebuilt from the ground up. Therefore, it certainly appears to be a remaster.

How deep this new style will go, it’s currently quite hard to say. The trailer showed off during Nintendo Direct at E3 was very impressive, showing the detailed landscapes and appealing character models. The game is also sure to make use of the improved Switch controls, with more buttons and playstyle options than the Game Boy Advance would allow.

There aren’t too many other details available about Advance Wars 1+2 Re-boot yet. Since it was only announced at today’s conference, all we know is what was shown in the trailer. We know the game is due for release on December 3, and pre-orders are open now on the Nintendo eShop.

As many other games at the conference are getting gameplay demos, you can probably imagine one to arrive soon – though that isn’t confirmed yet. We also don’t know whether any other entries in the Advance Wars will make their way to Switch. Potentially, the success of this remaster could re-ignite interest in the series.

In other news, Nintendo announced Smash Ultimate, the latest in the fighting series that is introducing characters from the Tekken series. Nintendo also confirmed that Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game will release on Switch this year.
