Half-Life 3 could happen as Alyx devs try to continue franchise

Half-Life 3 could very well be released in the future if the Half-Life: Alyx developers get their way. As the new documentary The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx notes, the latest VR release in this beloved game universe has unlocked the possibility of finally making Half-Life 3.

“This ice has been broken, now we’re hoping to smash through the ice completely,” stated Valve designer Phil Co as reported by GamesIndustry.biz. “We’re not afraid of Half-Life no more.”

A new gusto for Half-Life is reflected in the team’s desire to continue with the franchise. After more than a decade of false starts, the release of Half-Life: Alyx and its stellar popularity show that there is still a market for this old-school first-person shooter franchise.

Developers at Valve indicate that they would want to make a “full-scale Half-Life game for more traditional platforms,” likely meaning a non-VR title. If that’s the case, a next-gen Half-Life 3 could certainly be in the cards.

This new project won’t be without its challenges, though. Some developers are unsure that Valve can put together a large enough team to create a proper mainline Half-Life title. Will we ever see Half-Life 3? We can’t say for sure, but at least we know that the game has some champions at Valve HQ.
