Control Ultimate Edition Steam release desk

Control Ultimate Edition Steam release arrives this month

The Control Ultimate Edition Steam release is arriving this month exactly one year after it arrived on the Epic Games Store — and a PS4 and Xbox One version of the Ultimate Edition is arriving next month. While this is certainly good news, current console owners are getting some bad news: they won’t get a free next-gen upgrade.

Control is a multiplatform release, but the PC version made its debut as an exclusive on the Epic Games Store. A one-year exclusivity period is all but confirmed with the Control Ultimate Edition Steam release date of August 27, 2020.

Amusingly, the Epic Games Store is going to have to wait for the Ultimate Edition — that storefront will be getting this special version of Control on September 10, 2020, the same date that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will launch.

What’s in Control Ultimate Edition?

  • The base game
  • The Foundation expansion
  • The as-yet-unreleased AWE expansion
  • Expeditions endgame mode
  • Photo mode
  • All content updates since Control first released

Control Ultimate Edition Steam release floating

Some gamers — myself included — may have been waiting for a Steam release before diving into Remedy’s game. While the Control Ultimate Edition Steam release is certainly good news for patient PC gamers, console gamers are getting some bad news to go along with this announcement.

To start, the September 10, 2020 release date is for the digital version of the Control Ultimate Edition. The pandemic has caused all sorts of production problems around the world and it looks like Remedy’s game was affected, too; the article introducing the Ultimate Edition notes that the PS4 and Xbox One physical editions won’t launch until a vague “end of 2020” release date.

Players who have already bought control on the PS4 and Xbox One will also be disappointed to learn that the free next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X won’t apply to the base game. Only people who purchase the Control Ultimate Edition will get a free next-gen upgrade. There’s no news of a Nintendo Switch release, either.

In any case, it looks like the hotly-anticipated AWE DLC will bring an exciting end to Remedy’s game. For now, the PC gamers out there can add the Control Ultimate Edition Steam edition to their wishlist.
