UPDATE (August 26): The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Cross-Gen Bundle has now been confirmed, with pre-orders going live on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This bundle will allow players to make the upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, though they won’t be free — Activision will charge players $10 extra to make the jump.
The Cross-Gen Bundle costs $69.99 compared to the Standard Edition’s $59.99. Both editions include the game, the Confrontation Weapons Pack, early access to the open beta, operator Frank Woods, and a weapon blueprint for an assault rifle. The only difference between the two versions of the game is that the Cross-Gen Bundle will allow players to take the game to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, too.
ORIGINAL STORY: Next-gen gaming is looking a bit dire for one of the biggest upcoming games. According to a new leak, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade isn’t going to be free for players who buy the game on the PS4 or Xbox One. Instead, they’ll have to buy the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Cross-Gen Bundle (also known as the Cross-Gen Edition).
CharlieINTEL reports on the recent leaks surrounding the impending launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. This is definitely going to be a cross-gen game, but it looks like players are going to have to pay to upgrade their game to the new console generation according to these leaks.
The leaks suggest that if you buy the Standard Edition of the game, you get the base game and not much else. If you want to move over to the next-gen consoles easily, however, you’ll have to buy a completely different edition — the Standard Edition reportedly won’t include a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade.
Here’s the description of the Cross-Gen Bundle/Cross-Gen Edition via the report:
Includes Call of Duty®: Black Ops Cold War game (current-gen version and next-gen version when it launches) and Confrontation Weapons Pack. Pre-order and receive early access to the Open Beta and additional MW and WZ content.
According to that same leak, a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade will also be included with the game’s Ultimate Edition, naturally.
We’ve already seen our first hints of games going up in price with the $70 NBA 2K21 PS5 and Xbox Series X editions. Separately, we’ve seen similar shenanigans with the Control Ultimate Edition after it was revealed that current owners won’t get a free upgrade to next-gen consoles.
There is still a lot that we don’t yet know. The price for this game is still a bit of a mystery in advance of its upcoming Gamescom reveal. Judging on how things have been going, we’d estimate that the Standard Edition will retail for $59.99 and the Cross-Gen Edition will retail for $69.99.
Do keep in mind that these leaks were dug up by dataminers — as always, take this information with a grain of salt. Should these leaks about the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade prove true, I’m sure that a lot of fans are not going to be happy.
