The Witcher 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X release includes ray tracing and faster loading

The Witcher 3 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X, with developer CD Projekt Red confirming that the RPG will make its way to next-gen consoles. The Witcher 3: Complete Edition is set to launch on the new hardware, with this new “visually and technically enhanced version of the game” also being released as a free update for owners of the game on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

“We’re working on the next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!” an update on the official The Witcher website reads. “Developed to take advantage of the most powerful gaming hardware, the next-gen edition of the game will feature a range of visual and technical improvements — including ray tracing and faster loading times — across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content.

“The next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release as a standalone purchase for PC, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as a free update for everyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”

Interestingly, it seems that the Xbox Series X version of the game is being advertised over the PS5 version, with the Xbox box placed at the forefront of its first promotional material. This ties in with the ongoing partnership between CD Projekt Red and Microsoft, with Cyberpunk 2077‘s trailers having more prominently featured its Xbox release. Regardless, the game is still releasing on the PS4 and PS5.

While The Witcher 3 will no doubt look and perform better on the PS5 and Xbox Series X over its current-gen incarnations, it’s good to see CD Projekt Red not leaving current owners of the game behind and also releasing a free update for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game is set to launch in 2021, though no firm release date has been given.
