‘Hold off on purchasing’ PS5 SSD expansion, Sony says

Sony is advising players to “hold off on purchasing” a PS5 SSD expansion for now just a few days ahead of the console’s November 12 release date.

Games are getting bigger in size every day and that’s exactly why both next-gen consoles having expandable storage. While the Xbox Series X is going with a proprietary solution for expanding your storage space, Sony will let players use certain off-the-shelf SSDs in their PS5. There’s just one problem: it hasn’t yet released a list of which drives are compatible.

PS5 SSD expansion still isn’t ready

In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony mentions that the PS5 SSD expansion will allow players to have more space for their games “in the future.” Sony also confirms that the PS5’s expandable storage slot won’t work on launch day, owing to the need for a post-launch software update. As a consequence, it is advising players not to purchase any SSDs for their PS5 just yet.

“For now, we recommend that you hold off on purchasing any M.2 SSD drives intended for use with PS5,” said SIE’s Sid Shuman in today’s PlayStation Blog post. “We will share more details on recommended drives in the future. M.2 SSD storage functionality will come to PS5 after launch with an upcoming system software update.”

Sony has made some great improvements with the PS5, although it’s not without its problems. With only 667 GB of available space at launch, players may quickly run out of space in the era of games with install sizes hovering around 100 GB. Sony has also confirmed that PS5 games can’t be saved to an external hard drive, although it says it’s working on making this happen in a future update; even then, any PS5 games stored on an external hard drive won’t be playable.

Players looking to download a lot of games will have to wait for Sony to enable the functionality of the PS5 SSD expansion port and release its list of recommended drives. There are sure to be quite a few SSDs released in the coming weeks that can meet the speed requirements, but it’s best to wait for Sony to confirm which drives are recommended for the PS5.
