New ‘The World Ends with You’ game isn’t coming to PS5 on launch

A new The World Ends with You game will be arriving next year, but it’s not all good news. Titled NEO: The World Ends with You, this upcoming game will be bringing a brand-new cast of characters to PS4 and the Nintendo Switch — but not the PS5.

The World Ends with You is an action RPG that’s set in a pretty realistic recreation of the Shibuya fashion district in Tokyo. The game first debuted all the way back in 2007, but it has since become one of those cult classic games that hasn’t yet received a sequel (although it did get a pretty good Nintendo Switch port). Now, NEO: The World Ends With You has been officially revealed (via Gematsu) more than eight years after the co-creator first talked about making a sequel.

NEO: The World Ends with You features an all-new cast of characters

Players of the first game might be understandably skeptical of a sequel, but this new The World Ends with You game appears to feature an all-new cast. Rindo is the main characters of the game, joined by his companions Fret, Nagi, and Minamimoto. As with the previous game, the team of four fighters will dive into an alternate-world version of Shibuya and battle fantastical creatures.

This wasn’t the only new announcement, either. We got our first look at The World Ends with You anime that was revealed earlier this year. This new animation will be launching in Japan in April 2021, although it features the cast of characters from the original game.

NEO: The World Ends with You also happens to squash any rumors of the sequel being named The World Begins with You. No specific release date has been announced just yet, but we do know it’s coming to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch in 2021. Considering the launch of the anime will be in April, it’s likely that the game will launch around the same time. The only question that remains is whether or not this title will get a dedicated PS5 version or if it will only be available via backwards compatibility. For now, you can keep up with the game on its official website.
