PS5 seller SUP3R5 has canceled orders of its custom black PS2-themed version of the console after the site’s employees received “credible threats to their safety.” The site sold 300 units of the PS5, though has now informed buyers that they won’t receive their product and will instead be refunded.
SUP3R5’s PS5 sale proved incredibly popular, selling out within 20 minutes of going live. Users flooded the site to purchase the custom console, which was retailing for $649 as a result of its customized additions. But while some prospective buyers were undoubtedly impressed by its PS2-themed design (as they were with the mysterious PS5 Starbucks edition), many more simply wanted to get their hands on a PS5, with the console having been sold out across all US retailers for weeks now.
SUP3R5 releases a statement after canceling PS5 orders
Unfortunately, those who managed to successfully purchase the PS5 on the SUP3R5 site have now been informed that their orders have been canceled. In a now-deleted statement posted to the company’s (via VGC), the company states that it will be fully refunding customers in the coming days.
The statement reads:
“Last night, our team began receiving credible threats to their safety. We take these threats seriously. We aren’t willing to risk the safety and well-being of our team, or the potential impact this would bring to delivering your order. All existing orders will be cancelled and fully refunded in the coming days. You will receive a notification when this happens.
We intended this to be a fun way to celebrate a shared nostalgia. As it turns out, there are people out there who are willing to interfere with that. If we determine that it’s safe to try again, we will. For now, please stay safe.”
After SUP3R5 released this statement, it deleted its Twitter account entirely. Its website is still active, though informs users that it has postponed all sales of its retro consoles for the foreseeable.
“Release of our Retro Inspired controllers and consoles has been postponed,” a message on its site reads. “We’re cancelling and fully refunding all orders in the coming days. You will receive a notification when your refund is processed.”
It’s an unusual turn of events, though the few who managed to secure a PS5 from SUP3R5 will hopefully receive their refunds sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the company has said that it may consider attempting to sell its custom PS5 again in the future.
