The Last of Us 2 has received a free PS5 upgrade — kind of. Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed sequel will now run better on the PlayStation 5 thanks to a free patch, released on the PlayStation Store today for the PS4 version of the game.
The PS5 performance patch allows players to make use of a new option that allows them to switch between 30 FPS and 60 FPS, bringing the game in line with the technical improvements offered by the current-gen console. While it’s not exactly a full PS5 release for the game, Naughty Dog has confirmed that it has been “digging into the PS5 hardware and the possibilities it unlocks” for the future of the studio, adding that it’s excited for what the future holds.
The Last of Us 2 1.08 update patch notes
The Last of Us 2 1.08 update has added a new toggle in the Display options, which now allows you to choose between a Framerate Target of 30 FPS or 60 FPS.
As described by Arne Meyer, Director of Communications at Naughty Dog: “This allows you to choose your preferred framerate to complement the rest of the enhancements that are part of the PS5 backward compatibility with PS4 games, such as an enhanced resolution, faster load times, and more.”
Arne noted that this is the “first step” of working with the PS5, so there will presumably be more Naughty Dog news in the near future.
In other news, Days Gone’s lead actor said fans need to buy the game on PC if they want a sequel. GTA 6 was also trending on Twitter, though not for the reasons fans wanted.
