James Gunn directed over half of Peacemaker Season 1 alongside The Walking Dead and Titans vets

The Peacemaker directors have been confirmed for The Suicide Squad HBO Max spin-off series starring John Cena, as the show officially wraps up production on its first season. Over half of the eight episodes in Peacemaker Season 1 will be directed by The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn himself. The other three Peacemaker episodes are being covered by veteran directors from The Walking Dead, Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and fellow DC show Titans.

Lead director James Gunn confirmed to Collider that he himself would be directing five of the eight episodes of Peacemaker’s first season, as well as writing all eight, so the show should have the same feel as Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. As for the remaining three episodes, they will be directed by Jody Hill, Brad Anderson, and Rosemary Rodriguez. Gunn also confirmed on Twitter today that Peacemaker Season 1 has now officially wrapped production after eleven months.

Jody Hill is known for Observe & Report, Vice Principals, Eastbound & Down, and will be an executive producer on the upcoming Hellraiser TV series. Brad Anderson’s credits include directing twelve episodes of Fringe and a couple of episodes of DC’s Titans Season 1, including the pilot. Among Rosemary Rodriguez’s many credits include several episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and The Walking Dead. In other words, those episodes are in safe hands.

Peacemaker Season 1 will debut exclusively on HBO Max in January 2022 and James Gunn already has plenty of ideas for Season 2, even if it hasn’t been confirmed yet. It will serve as a prequel and origin story for John Cena’s Peacemaker as featured in The Suicide Squad, which is out very soon — July 30 in the UK, August 5 in the US. Don’t forget that there’s also a Suicide Squad game coming next year too, from Batman: Arkham Asylum creators Rocksteady.
