new star wars games 2022

New Star Wars games include Jedi Fallen Order 2, an FPS, and an XCOM-like strategy game

Multiple new Star Wars games for 2022 have been revealed from EA and Respawn Entertainment, including the eagerly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2, a new FPS by the Titanfall 2 team at Respawn, and a strategy game from one of the leads behind the XCOM: Enemy Unknown series by Firaxis. Work on all three games has “already begun” and hopefully at least one of them will hit this year, possibly even Star Wars Jedi 2.

New Star Wars Games 2022: Jedi Fallen Order 2

It seems very likely that the second Star Wars Jedi game will hit in November this year, but the new press release only confirms that the Fallen Order team at Respawn “are already working on the next game” in the series, presumably following the adventures of Jedi-in-training Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan) and his crew as they evade the Inquisitors and Darth Vader. The original game is one of the best Star Wars games ever, so hopes are high that the sequel will be even better.

New Star Wars Games 2022: Respawn FPS

Respawn’s main team, led by game director Peter Hirschmann, is working on a new Star Wars FPS. Other than games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 and the Jedi Knight series where third-person was preferable, there hasn’t really been a Star Wars FPS since either Republic Commando or Dark Forces. “This is a story I have always wanted to tell,” Hirschmann says, although the release also says that Respawn has “just begun work” on the shooter, which suggests that it will be a few years away yet.

New Star Wars Games 2022: XCOM-like strategy

The Star Wars strategy game is a “production collaboration” between Respawn and new studio Bit Reactor, which is headed by ex-Firaxis developer Greg Foerstch, who was art director on both XCOM and XCOM 2, so presumably the Star Wars title may be turn-based and XCOM-like, too. In a recent interview with GameIndustry, Foerstch says that the team want to blur the line “between what a strategy game is and what an action game is” with its first title, so also expect a more action-packed strategy than the slower-paced XCOM.

These titles join LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which has just been confirmed for an April release, and an open-world Ubisoft game in production. This means that Star Wars gaming fans finally have a lot to look forward to.
