Not much was available about Bethesda's new title Dishonored except for a cryptic cover on Game Informer, but now the GI article is live and it's full of details on what Harvey Smith, a lead developer for Thief and Deus Ex, along with Arkane Studios' Raf Colantonio, has in store.
The story centers around Corvo, the legendary bodyguard for the Empress, who is falsely accused of murdering her by Lord Regent. Corvo, however, isn't one to go down easily and he has supernatural powers, unusual gadgets, and an all-around knack for ass-kicking stealth-ops to bring Regent and his goons down.
His powers include being able to stop time, summon rats, and even possess a rat to escape detection. In that way, it's like Double Fine's Stacking, where there are multiple solutions to a problem, and which solutions you choose (that is, how much destruction you cause) impacts the game world around you.
It’s an assassination game that reacts to how violent you are. An unusual “chaos” system tracks how much collateral damage you cause, and the game world changes as a result of your actions. Unlike a light/dark side meter, though, it’s a behind-the-scenes element that affects story decisions without punishing the player or pushing them to play one way or another.
