PlayStation Worldwide Studios Boss: PS Move “Ahead of Its Time” and Will Add to Project Morpheus

Sony's PlayStation Move controller added motion controls to a few popular brands and added family support to the platform where it had been lacking, though Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told reporters recently that the add-on will add to the in-home Project Morpheus experience.

While PlayStation Move games haven't really materialized on PlayStation 4, the executive suggested that they'll have a resurgence:

Motion gaming was a big thing but, like with social games, dance games, music or guitar games, I do'nt think there's a lot of appetite for another motion game at this moment. However, what we are realising ourselves is that PS Move was a bit ahead of its time—a precise and accurate 3D input device. We were very excited about the possibility of using 3D positional tracking to make games, but it's really hard to do so with a regular 2D screen.

With PlayStation 4 not shipping with a camera peripheral, PlayStation Move use got a bit more expensive for next-gen console buyers. The out-the-door cost will only rise when adding a Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, though that won't stop the most diehard gamers out there. Yoshida showed an awareness of this too in emphasizing that Project Morpheus experiences need to work as well as they do in controlled Sony tests.

"So now we are realizing that when we do Project Morpheus the one thing you want to do immediately is interact with an object in virtual space, and the one way to do that is that you need a 3D positioning input device, like PS Move."
