The Lemokey L3 keyboard, part of Keychron’s lineup, enters the market as a high-end, 2.4 GHz full metal custom mechanical keyboard. Its promise of peak performance, coupled with extensive customization, sets high expectations. Can it deliver, especially given the higher price tag?
Big and bold
At first glance, the Lemokey L3’s full metal body and 6063 aluminum CNC machined chassis exude a sense of premium quality and durability. However, this design choice contributes to its substantial weight (nearly 2 KG) and larger footprint, which might not be practical for users with limited desk space. For those who can make room for this beast, however, the L3 is a statement piece that immediately draws the eye (especially in the Space Silver color that I was sent for review).
Extra buttons and a knob
Customization is another area where the Lemokey L3 shines. The hot-swappable PCB, compatible with various MX-style mechanical switches, allows users to tailor their typing experience without the need for soldering. The programmable knob and macro column add a level of convenience for both gaming and productivity, enabling easy access to commonly used functions. Furthermore, the QMK/VIA compatibility ensures virtually limitless customization for key mappings and macros, though newcomers may find the process a tad daunting.
Wireless wins
The keyboard’s 2.4 GHz wireless connection, complemented by a 1000 Hz polling rate, ensures responsive and low-latency performance, which comes in particularly handy for gaming. The additional programmable keys and the encoder also provide an edge in games.
The Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity, allowing for easy switching between multiple devices, is a boon for multitaskers. However, the absence of onboard storage for the 2.4 GHz dongle and the lack of adjustable keyboard legs might be minor inconveniences for some users.
Out-of-the-box performer
The double-gasket design and Cherry double-shot PBT keycaps offer a comfortable typing experience. The Gateron Jupiter switches are very satisfying to use and combine nicely with the tuned stabilizers.
Priced at $214 for the fully-assembled version, the Lemokey L3 sits in the higher price bracket. While expensive, its build quality, customization options, and unique features like the rotary encoder and programmable macro keys offer value for money, especially when compared to other premium mainstream gaming keyboards.
Final Verdict
The Lemokey L3 stands out as a high-quality, customizable keyboard, ideal for users who appreciate a solid build and impressive aesthetic design. While it excels in many areas, its larger size, steep software learning curve, and some ergonomic shortcomings may not appeal to all users. However, its solid construction, excellent typing experience, and versatile connectivity options make it a compelling choice for those willing to invest in a premium keyboard experience.
