Cyberpunk 2077 crunch expected as devs approach release date

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red said it will require its employees to put in extra hours as the game’s release date approaches. The developer recently delayed Cyberpunk to September from its original April release date, but those extra months of development won’t make for any less Cyberpunk 2077 crunch.

During a conference call about Cyberpunk’s delay, CD Projekt Red Joint-CEO Adam Kiciński was asked if the development team would be required to “put in crunch hours.” In response, Kiciński  said, “To some degree, yes – to be honest,” adding that CD Projekt Red tries to limit the required crunch hours “as much as possible, but it is the final stage.”

Despite what may or may not be true of some anti-crunch delays, delays often cause more crunch for developers, according to developers at studios like Naughty Dog who spoke to Kotaku reporter Jason Schreier. It’s perhaps unfortunate for CD Projekt Red, then, that the company announced in the same conference call that Cyberpunk multiplayer won’t come until 2022.
