Kingdoms of Amalur

Kingdoms of Amalur IP Acquired by THQ Nordic

THQ Nordic has announced today that it has acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning from 38 Studios. The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC RPG garnered positive reviews upon release and became something of a cult classic. Unfortunately, legal and money issues made sure that the game wouldn’t see a sequel (along with poor sales).

THQ Nordic announced the news of their purchase on their official Twitter account. This means, of course, that THQ Nordic can now do what it pleases with Amalur. THQ Nordic explained that it was “beyond proud” to have “acquired the “Kingdoms of Amalur” IP, among other assets, from 38 Studios.” The full tweet can be seen below.

Unfortunately, THQ Nordic didn’t explain further on the “other assets” it acquired. Despite this, however, the fact that Kingdoms of Amalur has a new owner will prove to be exciting news to many.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning is a third-person open-world action RPG set in a fantasy Medieval setting, sitting somewhere between the Fable games and The Elder Scrolls. The combat and leveling system earned the game many plaudits back in the day. Poor sales and legal issues held the game back from garnering a large enough audience.

It’s plausible that we will see another game  in the series or a remaster with an awkward pun. Both Darksiders games got current gen ports and is getting a sequel in November. While we don’t definitively know what THQ Nordic has up its sleeves for Kindoms of Amalur, the company will surely want to do something with the IP since they likely didn’t purchase the rights to leave them alone. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about any such plans soon.
