Capcom PS5 and new Xbox preparations teased by lack of 2019 game announcements

In its financial highlights for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, Capcom revealed that the Monster Hunter World Iceborne expansion was the only AAA release planned for launch during 2019 and the first quarter of 2020. The lack of any big titles launching during this period hints at potential Capcom PS5 and new Xbox preparations, with the publisher holding fire until the new next-gen consoles have hit the market.

With the PS5 not launching until after “early 2020,” the delay in AAA releases from Capcom lines up with the launch of at least one of the two major next-gen consoles.

The financial highlights also detail a number of successes by Capcom over the past year. For example, Devil May Cry 5 shipped 2 million units, which has “successfully reinvigorat[ed] the brand.” Also considered noteworthy is Resident Evil 2, which shipped 4 million units.

The additional launch of Monster Hunter World on PC pushed the total sales for the game past 12 million units.

The financial report also details successes in the esports space, where Capcom held the Street Fighter League during Feb-March 2019. New leagues have also been announced in Japan and overseas, which aim to “broadly grow player demographic.”

Planned film adaptations of games were also mentioned. These include both Monster Hunter and Mega Man. The former is scheduled to release in 2020, while the latter had originally been confirmed last October.

In other PS5 news, Sony has revealed a few new details about the upcoming console. For those looking to upgrade from a PS4, you’ll be happy to learn that the PS5 will be backward-compatible with PS4 titles. What’s more, if you’ve picked up the PlayStation VR and are worried that it won’t work with the new system, fret not, because PSVR will indeed be compatible with PS5. And finally, the PS5 will support 8K resolutions.
