Is BioWare making the Knights of the Old Republic remake?

So is the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake BioWare-developed? The KOTOR remake has long been rumored and has finally been confirmed at the PlayStation Showcase by Lucasfilm Games, however the only other company involved is Aspyr. Is BioWare involved in the Knights of the Old Republic remake? Is the KOTOR remake BioWare created, or is it a completely new game? Let’s have a look.

Is the Knights of the Old Republic remake BioWare-developed?

Knights of the Old Republic remake bioware

BioWare is seemingly not directly involved with the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, although as the developer behind the original game it will be strongly based on their work. The only reason BioWare would be left off from any sort of mention in the trailer is if the new Knights of the Old Republic was a full remake in the style of Resident Evil 2 or Final Fantasy VII Remake — in other words, a full remake where everything is new and it is only generally recognizable as the first KOTOR.

After the initial PlayStation Showcase stream was finished, Aspyr’s lead producer Ryan Treadmill came out to confirm that the project is indeed a “complete remake” of the original KOTOR, rebuilt “from the ground up.” It’s certainly a massive project for Aspyr, which up until now has only really done ports and updated remasters of games — not complete remakes. Treadmill promises the remake will be “authentic” to Knights of the Old Republic 1, but will basically be a whole new game.

Consequently, BioWare will undoubtedly be mentioned in the end credits, but it is otherwise not involved — however, Treadmill does also say that some of the original game’s developers have joined Aspyr to help make the remake too, which is good news. There’s no news on a release date or whether or not it is actually a PS5 exclusive, so fans will have to wait to hear more.
