Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey | How to find the baby monkey

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey doesn’t hold your hand. In its opening moments, you’re tasked with finding a baby monkey (or hominid, as the game accurately refers to them as) who has ventured into a hiding spot in order to avoid predators. As you won’t be used to Ancestor‘s barely-explained mechanics at this point, it can be tough to find where the baby monkey is hiding.

Read on for a guide on how to find the baby monkey in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.

How to find the baby monkey in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Your first objective in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is to either make your way to your clan’s sanctuary or to find a hiding spot in which to evade its world’s vicious predators. This sanctuary is highlighted on your map when you enter intelligence mode (press Y), with it having a purple icon as opposed to the other plain-colored icons.

As the baby monkey, if you make your way to the sanctuary without instead curling up in a hiding spot, you’ll continue to play as this baby. However, if you instead retreat to a hiding spot, you’ll then assume the role of an adult who is tasked with rescuing you.

Finding the baby is an exercise in utilizing Ancestors‘ focus and hearing abilities in order to uncover its location. You’ll need to use both in order to ascertain which hiding spot the monkey is located in, with your focus ability allowing you to target and then analyze the mysterious boxes/diamonds that you’ll see on your HUD.

At this early stage in the game, the majority of these boxes/diamonds will display a question mark when investigated. This is because you’ve yet to find the relevant items or locations. To make this process easier, find a hiding spot — they’re each located on the floor of the world. After doing so, when investigating a hiding spot in intelligence mode, its icon will be displayed in place of the question mark.

Baby monkey location

The baby monkey will have no set location, given that it will depend on where you chose as your hiding spot at the beginning of the game. As such, you’ll need to use your hearing ability in order to listen in to its cries.

To enter hearing mode, first press X to start sensing, then B. You’ll see a variety of white rings displayed on-screen, though the calls of nearby wildlife will be displayed with yellow rings. A lone yellow ring in the near-distance should pinpoint the location of the baby monkey, and if you can’t see any yellow rings outside of the calls of your clan, you’ll need to venture further out.

Once you have found the hiding spot the baby monkey is rested in, you’ll need to press B to carry it. After doing so, you will then need to take it to your settlement to regroup with the rest of your clan. You will then be able to progress in the game with the baby monkey having successfully rejoined your clan.
