How to attack and counter-attack in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Attacking and counter-attacking in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is deceptively simple, though there is a knack to it. You’ll need to get the timing right, and you can reduce the margin of error when it comes to taking down an enemy by way of gaining neuronal energy and leveling up.

In order to attack, you’re first going to need to obtain a weapon. You can learn how to do this in our weapon guide. After grabbing your weapon, you’ll need to go out on the hunt.

You can use your scent to locate a nearby enemy, though as enemy encounters slow down time, it doesn’t matter too much if they get the jump on you. While it is always better to approach a predator before they approach you, you’ll still get ample opportunity to respond to their attacks if they manage to sneak up on your monkey.

When an enemy has you in their sights, you’ll see the eye next to your dopamine meter turn yellow. Once they attack, you must hold the A button and push the analog stick forwards in order to retaliate. You’ll hear an audio cue after a period of time, at which point you should release the A button.

If you time your release of the A button correctly, you will hit them with your weapon. The timing of this attack is crucial, as if you fail to release the button when you hear the audio cue, you’ll either be attacked or your weapon will fail to deal an adequate amount of damage to the enemy.

But what’s the use in attacking enemies if you can’t kill them? After successfully attacking an enemy, you may find that they don’t go down in one hit. Along with your timing, there’s also some RNG to successfully killing a predator, meaning that you may need to hit them a few times before they finally go down.

After you’ve successfully attacked an enemy, if you don’t kill them, they’ll wander off in order to lick their wounds. At this point, you should make sure you use your senses in order to track their location so you can continue to hunt them down, before crafting and equipping another weapon.

In order to kill an enemy, you’ll need to repeat this process until you down them. After you’ve done so, a short cutscene will play to show your bloodthirsty monkey reveling in their victory.

Enemies can take 4-5 hits before you finally kill them, so if you really want to fell a predator, make sure you keep tracking and hunting them until they’re on their last legs.
