Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey doesn’t hold the players’ hand in any capacity. From the get-go, you’re thrown into its brutal world without any direction aside from being tasked with surviving. But in these opening minutes, you won’t survive. You’ll die and die again until you figure out what you’re supposed to be doing, and while some will take it upon themselves to figure it out, others will want a helping hand. With that being said, here’s our Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey tips guide to all the tips and tricks beginners will want to know:
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Always carry two babies
You need neuronal energy in order to unlock new abilities. You can only generate neuronal energy if you have a baby with you, and the easiest way to do that is to carry them. You can carry two babies at a time (press B near them), though you can also get additional babies to follow you.

Unfortunately, the AI isn’t the sharpest in Ancestors, so you’re not really going to want a valuable baby to wander around behind you. As such, carrying them is always the best option.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Reach the maximum number of clan members possible
There’s no downside to maxing out your clan members. The cap is 20, and you can immediately get to work on expanding your clan by getting a fertile male and female hominid to mate with one another. After this, you can have a baby, expanding your clan in the process.
Maximizing the number of members your clan has increases your chances of survival. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey has a fail state, so when all of your hominids are dead, it’s game over. Ensuring that you always have plenty of monkeys in your clan to prevent such an occurrence is crucial, and having babies is the best way to do that.
You won’t always be able to reach the cap, as you may find that you’re left with hominids who can’t have babies, or each of your fertile monkeys has already reached the maximum number of babies they can have (it’s capped at 2 per hominid). However, by expanding your clan as much as possible, this will ensure that you will have more clan members when you fast-forward generations or evolve, and will lessen the odds of you going extinct when attacked by a predator.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Be careful when advancing a generation
Skipping ahead by a generation will allow your clan to grow, though it can also leave you in a tight spot. When you advance a generation, all of your babies become adults, your adults become elders, and your elders die. This means that if your clan consists entirely of adults and elders, you’re only going to be left with elder monkeys, therefore ensuring that you can’t have babies and leaving your clan to die out.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Stockpile weapons at your settlement
Everything wants to eat you in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, so you’re going to want to make a weapon as fast as you can. You can find out how to craft a weapon and use it to attack enemies in our guide, but if you want something to quickly defend yourself with, a rock from the ground can be used as a makeshift way to fend off a predator.
Once you have a weapon crafted, you’ll be much less vulnerable while exploring, but you’re going to want to keep your clan protected, too. You will eventually unlock the ability for your clan to be able to use weapons to defend themselves, but until then you’ll be their lone savior. As such, you should stockpile crafted weapons in your settlement, in case a predator stumbles upon your hominids and tries to wipe them out.
In order to stockpile items, you need to approach one dropped item and press RB to drop another of the same item on top of it. Whenever you evolve and your clan has moved to a new settlement, be sure to craft weapons immediately and stockpile them. This way, whenever a predator charges in and tries to tear your monkeys a new one, you’ll immediately be able to defend yourself.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Check for gathering spots
Gathering spots usually contain some useful resources, though will require some additional legwork. For instance, a liftable rock can be lifted using a stick, with it containing some extra goodies beneath it. Certain pools of water may contain a fishing spot, which you can approach with a sharpened stick in order to spear a fish to increase your energy.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey Tips | Hunt the predators
The predators in Ancestors‘ world don’t respawn until you move forward a generation, skip time after giving birth, or evolve. As such, when you kill a predator on the map, they won’t reappear and you can navigate the world without fear of being attacked by them. If there’s a predator that keeps popping up in your settlement, make sure that you take them out before they do the same to you.
With attacking in Ancestors being completely reliant on timing, it’s actually quite simple to take out a larger animal than you. While they might take three or four sharpened sticks, it’s advantageous to eradicate them before they start killing hominids in your settlement. As such, go out on the hunt and take them down to ensure they won’t sneak up on you later.
