Having a baby in Ancestors is the most surefire way to keep your lineage going, and will be crucial to your ongoing survival. However, like much of the game, you aren’t exactly told how to mate, how to give birth, and how to have a kid.

How to form a couple in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

To mate in Ancestors, you need to form a bond with another monkey/hominid. Fortunately, it’s much easier to do this in-game than it is in real life. Though this isn’t explained in-game, the process behind it is simple. While various monkeys can bond, only fertile monkeys of the opposite sex can bond. Fertile monkeys will typically be adult (male elder monkeys are also fertile), so switch to a fertile, adult monkey and then find another similar monkey of the opposite sex.

Each monkey can only parent two children. To see how many children each monkey currently has, approach them and analyze them (press Y). This will allow you to see more information pertaining to their family, including their parents and offspring. If the monkey doesn’t have children, then you can begin grooming them (press B).

To successfully groom another monkey, hold B until you hear an audio cue. Let go of B each time you hear the audio cue, and if you’re doing it correctly, a bonding meter will appear onscreen. When the bonding meter is filled, the monkeys will form a couple.

In order to have a baby, you’ll then need to head over to a sleeping spot. A sleeping spot can be made by laying down (item name) into a bundle, pressing RB to stack the (items) atop one another. You’ll then need to press A to lay down on the sleeping spot, and press B to call your mate over to the same spot. You’ll then be given the option to mate.

If you’re mating with two fertile monkeys, you’ll be told that a “new pregnancy” has occurred. You can then press B to give birth, moving time forward 15 months into the future. You can have two babies per couple, so you can immediately mate and give birth again.

Babies are crucial to evolving in Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, so you’ll need to keep reproducing throughout each new generation. Make sure you keep mating and making those babies!
