There’s a big moment close to the beginning of The Last of Us 2 which will result in a beloved character dying. A lot of players will be sad to see this person go, and possibly be wondering if it’s possible to save them from such a fate. Here’s what you need to know about the ability to save the key character at the beginning of The Last of Us Part 2.
Can you save Joel in The Last of Us 2?
Unfortunately, for fans of the original game’s gruff protagonist, it isn’t you can’t save Joel in The Last of Us 2. His fate is sealed and there is nothing that the player, as Ellie, can do about it.

It might be tempting to try and find another way into the basement area, where Abby and her friends are torturing Joel, as the game does allow you to move through the different rooms and around the house itself. It might have been cool to find a secret passage to crawl through, for an alternate timeline where Ellie manages to kill Abby at the start of the game.
However, despite our searching, there is no way to continue the story without entering the door to the basement. You simply have to use that door, get disarmed, and then be forced to the ground in order for the plot to continue. And that does mean Joel’s death has to happen. Again, there is no way to stop Joel dying in The Last of Us 2.
